Gillespie asked, looking past Cruz to the desert beyond the shaded window.
„Without a hat or canteen?“ Cruz retorted. „She isn’t a fool.“
„Not according to her own estimate.“
„Laurel doesn’t trust us,“ Cruz said flatly. „She doesn’t completely trust her father, either. That’s why she’s
here.“
„Ballocks. She’s here because you’re here.“
Cruz gave Gillespie a long look. „Yeah,“ Cruz said, but his tone said there wasn’t a chance in hell Gillespie
was right.
„Wake up, laddie my boy. She looks at you like she wants to spread you on a biscuit and lick up every last
crumb.“
„Hell of an idea,“ Cruz said, grinning involuntarily.
„So why don’t you do something about it?“
„For instance?“
„Get off your arse, go after her with a picnic basket and a bottle of wine, and get her trust the old-fashioned
way.“
