For almost twenty minutes they sat holding each other and kissing. Finally she broke away from his embrace and went inside for the night. She found her dad waiting up in the living room. He sat in his big blue bathrobe, sipping hot cocoa. "I made it for you," he told her with a wink, "but I ended up drinking it myself." She laughed and thanked him. "It's the thought that counts." After he had gone upstairs, she made another cup, adding plenty of tiny marsh-mallows. She sat for a long time watching the snow fall outside the kitchen window. It was coming down even harder now. It made her feel peaceful, being inside and warm on such a stormy night. Then she thought of Aidan, who had to drive home in this weather. His brand-new low-slung green Cobra sports car simply wasn't meant for winter. The roads were icy, and he didn't even have snow tires. Tick tick tick . , . She looked around. The kitchen wall clock was electric, and silent. Where was that faint ticking coming from? It seemed to be deep inside her own brain. Unless . . . She remembered her dream. The ticking bomb! "No. That's stupid!" she decided, forcing herself to put it out of her head once again. She carried her mug of cocoa up the stairs. The sound of light snoring wafted out of Jimmy's room. She smiled. This was one of the only times she consistently felt affection for her younger brother: when he was sleeping! Next she passed her parents' bedroom. There was a strip of light under the door. She could hear the TV news . . . ". . . The accident occurred just minutes ago. The teenage driver was killed instantly when his green Cobra exploded in a gigantic fireball—" Aidan! chapter 2 McKenzie felt as if someone had punched her in the stomach. Barely able to breathe, she clutched at the wall, determined not to faint. It had happened. Just as she saw it. No! No! Her mind wouldn't accept that Aidan was gone. It couldn't be. She wouldn't let it be! Every nerve ending in her body suddenly cried out with rage and denial. She wouldn't believe it—not until she saw it for herself. McKenzie burst through the bedroom door, racing straight for the TV. She ran right past her father's side of the bed, bumping his elbow; Shelby spilled his cocoa. Aidant, "What did they say?" McKenzie demanded. "What did they say?" "McKenzie, calm down!" scolded Joanne from the bed. "What's the matter with you?" A picture of a short, red-haired teen with glasses flashed on the screen. "His name was Andy Mulroney," intoned the announcer. "He was nineteen. Now he's dead." "Oh, wow," moaned McKenzie. She sank to the carpet. "I thought—I'm sorry." "You thought what?" Shelby asked. |
