"What?" Aidan shouted.

She repeated it twice, then gave up. Putting her arms around his neck, McKenzie moved Aidan out onto the dance floor.

"Lilicat seems to like him," Aidan said into her ear as they danced.

McKenzie looked over at Lilicat. Her friend was shimmying, doing moves she and McKenzie had practiced in the mirror last week. Aidan was right. Lilicat did like him.

The club's deejay glided from one fast song into the next. Now he was playing the new pop tune "Love Is Fate."

"It was fate that we met," sang a woman's silky voice. "And I can't get. . . you outta my heaaarrt ..."

"Hi, guys." It was Kirk. He danced easily alongside Aidan and McKenzie. "Lilith went to the bathroom," he explained, answering the question in McKenzie's eyes.

"Here she conies," she told him, spotting Lilicat across the dance floor.

"Listen," Kirk said to Aidan. "How about if I dance this one with McKenzie?"

The frown on Aidan's face gave McKenzie a thrill. They'd been going out for months now.

She was glad he still cared enough to be a little jealous.

Aidan quickly recovered. "Sure, go ahead!" he yelled over the crashing music.

Kirk was a great dancer, McKenzie had to admit. But then he started dancing really close. She danced backward, rocking to the beat. But he followed. Soon his face was only inches away, his intense eyes locked on hers. "You've got the cutest freckles I've ever seen," he told her.

She pretended not to have heard and danced harder, her steps carrying her into her own orbit away from Kirk. It was nice to have gotten the compliment. But it made her uncomfortable. Was she wrong, or was that a come-on? She must be wrong. He wouldn't do that, not with Aidan and Lilicat right there.

McKenzie was relieved when the song ended. She quickly rejoined Lilicat and Aidan, who stood off to the side. McKenzie saw that Lilicat had freshened her makeup in the bathroom. She seemed to have fallen hard for Kirk. McKenzie hoped Lilicat wouldn't get hurt—Kirk was a little too slick.

They danced for another hour, but McKenzie made it a point to stay close to Aidan. Finally they all agreed they'd had enough and left the

club. They got into Aidan's car and drove toward Kirk's house, their first stop on the way home.

"Is that guy hot or what?" Lilicat said after Kirk had gone inside. She shivered playfully and threw back her long black hair. "He was, like, the blind date of my dreams."

"He was pretty cute," McKenzie agreed, deciding not to say more than that.

"Did you think he was so good looking?" Aidan asked McKenzie, after dropping off Lilicat. He had parked in front of the Golds' house. Outside the car snow sifted down, enveloping them in whiteness.

Even though his hair was always mussed and he had a slightly crooked nose from a childhood accident, Aidan was very handsome. The fact that Kirk was technically more handsome wasn't something McKenzie was about to tell him. Besides, she liked Aidan's looks better. There was laughter in his eyes, warmth in his smile. He was real—not some model type impressed with his own image.

"He was good looking, but not compared to you," she told him. He smiled at her, obviously savoring the compliment.

McKenzie stroked his cheek and kissed him. She loved him so much!

Then she thought of her nightmare. Usually she liked to tell Aidan everything. But she didn't want to come off like his mother or something, telling him to be careful because she had a nightmare.
