He was educated at Brentwood School in Essex, and St John's College Cambridge. He originally created The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy as a radio series for the BBC, and then wrote it again as a novel for Pan Books. He wrote three more Hitch Hiker novels: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything, and So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish.
