"In a separate bedroom, of course," he said.

"Of course," Lisa said.

Kosta talked for a while about Donna. Lisa told Kosta that she also
was not looking for romance. So it was settled.

Neither of them was looking for a long-term relationship.

On that first date Lisa learned little about Kosta's childhood, but one
incident that Kosta related that night did stick in her mind.

One day in Pefki, when Kosta was twelve, he went exploring in an empty
field and found a hand grenade, perhaps a remnant of the German
occupation of Greece. Instead of surrendering the grenade to the or
his parents, Kosta took it to his cellar, where he lit it.

Lisa was aghast when she heard the story. "You could have been
killed," she said. But Kosta smiled proudly. "No problem," he
explained. "I know about explosives." Kosta also mentioned owning one

were parking. Lover's lane. Four Mexicans Then approached us. One of
the Mexicans said, "Hey, why don't you come out of there." I pulled
out my gun and ,ointed it at them and said, "Hey, why don't you come in
here." They left quickly. But if I hadn't had the gun, who knows what
might have happened to me, or my girlfriend."

Lisa had to agree that it made sense to have a gun on that particular
night. Maybe Kosta was right; maybe it was a good idea for a person to
carry a gun for protection.

They talked for a while about people they had dated.

Lisa had gone out with a lot of fellows, she said, but had never been
involved in a serious romance. Kosta made it sound as if he had
