“Do you want a new Handler?”
Laurel held her breath, waiting for Devlin’s answer, praying he wouldn’t say yes.
Even though they had crossed the line, she didn’t want to lose him as one of her Paladins. Even if she
could convince one of the other Handlers to keep her apprised of Devlin’s progress, it wouldn’t be the
same.
“No, I don’t, but this can’t happen again.”
That much was true. She nodded, unable to speak, her eyes stinging from the threat of tears.
“Not here, anyway.” He leaned close enough so that his warm breath tickled her skin. “On the
other hand, my dear Dr. Young, I can promise you this: When you and I do go to bed together, it’ll be
someplace a hell of a lot more private than this. Because nothing is going to stop us from finishing what
we started today.”
And then he was gone.
