ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jacques Futrelle (1875-1912) was born in Georgia on April 9th, the son of an Atlanta teacher. He began to write for the Atlanta Journal at age 18, and moved on to the New York Herald two years later. As a creative outlet, in his spare time he worked on detective stories involving his unique character, Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen, the "Thinking Machine." In 1906 he left the newspaper business to devote his full efforts to creative writing. Between 1905-1912 he produced 42 Thinking Machine stories. He made the unfortunate decision to sail with his wife from England to the United States aboard the Titanic, and was drown when the ship sank on April 15th, 1912.
