Sunset 4 - Sunset Farewellone "Hey, lady, could I interest you in some very
private private lessons?" Kurt Ackerman came up behind his girlfriend, Emma
Cresswell, and whispered insinuatingly in her ear.
She turned around and faced him with a look of feigned innocence. "That would be
swimming lessons, right?" "That would be," he agreed, "unless you have something
else in mind." "Not me," she said, shaking her head.
"Ah, proper to the very end," Kurt said with a regretful sigh.
"Oh, really?" Emma said. She grabbed his T-shirt, pulled him to her, and kissed
him hard. "There," she said, when she had left him completely breathless. "That
was a seriously improper kiss." "I'll say," Kurt managed.
The two of them were standing on the back porch of the Sunset Country Club,
where Kurt worked as head swimming instructor. Because it was a rather cold day,
they were completely alone, but they knew that someone could come out and catch
them at any moment. Kissing while on duty was frowned upon for the staff.
Emma felt rather proud of herself. She had certainly come a long way since her
arrival on Sunset Island. Had it really only been a few short weeks since she'd
gotten off the ferry feeling totally unsure of herself and of what the summer
might hold for her?
Emma thought back on her decision to take a job for the summer. As a Cresswell,
of the Boston Cresswells, Emma had never worked a day in her life. In the
rarefied atmosphere in which she lived-educated abroad, invited to all of the
"right" functions with all of the "right" people-this was accepted behavior. But
as Emma approached her senior year at Aubergame, her Swiss boarding school, she
had started to see things differently. She was no longer satisfied to accept
things the way they were. She didn't want to follow in the footsteps of her
hypocritical, egocentric parents. There was a whole great big world out there,
and Emma wanted to explore it.
She had decided to take a job as an au pair, and she'd been hired by Jane and
Jeff Hewitt to care for their children at their summer home on Sunset Island,
off the coast of Maine.
It had turned out well, actually. She liked the down-to-earth Hewitts and was
becoming like a big sister to the kids. Emma had also made two great friends in
Samantha Bridges and Carrie Alden, whom she had met at an au pair convention in
New York. She even had her first really serious boyfriend. The only bad part of
the experience was that she had lied to everybody at first about her background,
not wanting them to know she was extremely rich for fear that they would treat
her differently. Later, when her new friends found out the truth, they'd been
angry with Emma for lying to them. Well, now that some time had passed, all of
that anger was in the past. And she was delighted to find that scared, insecure,
ever-so-proper Emma Cresswell had become confident enough ta take Kurt
Ackerman's breath away with a kiss on the back porch of the Sunset Country Club.
"I guess I'd better get back to the pool," Kurt said with a sigh, "much as I
would rather stay out here and let you molest me." "I'll molest you later," Emma
said playfully. "How's that?" "Promises, promises." Kurt checked his watch.
"Oops, I gotta run." "Okay. What time are you picking me up tonight?" Emma asked
eagerly. Since Kurt was going to college and working two jobs, he rarely had an
evening off. For over a week he and Emma had been planning a romantic picnic in
the dunes.
"Eight-thirty or so," Kurt said.
Emma was disappointed. "I thought your last swimming lesson was at six." "If
